Provost Highlights, 2023-2024

Costas Spirou

This has been an exciting academic year at Georgia College & State University.  We welcomed our largest ever first-year class while continuing to deliver the unique liberal arts experience that defines the university and prepares students for success.

U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best Colleges guidebook ranked Georgia College sixth among Top Public Universities in the Regional South. We earned top accolades for excellence in teaching, institutional innovation and academic programs including nursing, business, psychology, and computer science.

Georgia College continues to attract the highest caliber of students; as undergraduate applications are up 45% over the past two years.

Students like Colin Hall and Axel Hawkins – Georgia College’s back-to-back Truman Scholar recipients – are leading our student body in the types of transformative learning experiences that build critical thinking, communication and exceptional research skills.  We are devoted to helping students succeed both in the workplace, as well as in graduate or professional schools.

The teacher-scholar model is a hallmark of the Georgia College emphasis on outstanding faculty committed to mentoring students.  Our faculty have engaged in research with a winning proposal for NASA’s next-generation space telescope, discovered entirely new species of millipedes and worked with global partners to reduce the prevalence of toxic pesticides in our food supply.

Students are involved in undergraduate research across all our colleges. More than 500 students participated in our annual Research Day, presenting posters, papers and panel discussions on topics in numerous academic disciplines and fields of study.

We’re looking ahead to a record total enrollment at Georgia College for the 2024-2025 academic year. Our commitment to the liberal arts mission and workforce preparation by putting students first remains constant with small class sizes, dedicated faculty and staff, robust student organizations, athletics and impactful community partnerships.

Sincerely,

Dr. Costas Spirou
Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

James Webb Telescope

GCSU astrophysicist's idea among top for next NASA telescope

AXIS will be a breakthrough for X-ray optics that are lightweight and able to produce even-higher resolution pictures from space. Its large optic mirrors and detectors will allow astronomists to see further with better clarity.

“It’s the next leap forward in X-ray astronomy.”

Faculty-mentored Research

GCSU ecologist and students spotlight the unknown underworld of millipedes

Despite its critical contribution to the environment, only a handful of scientists in the world study the lowly, multi-segmented invertebrate.

In fact, only two universities in the United States have millipede labs. Georgia College & State University is one of them—making its ecologist, Dr. Bruce Snyder, a rare expert.

GCSU scientist and students study toxins affecting our food

In his study of chemicals used to kill insects, weeds, rodents and other pests—Dr. Sayo Fakayode has come to call it: Pesticide on Your Plate.

The slogan creates a terrifying mental picture, clearly outlining what’s become a worldwide problem.
